Club captain Gary Caldwell has revealed to Latics Official that he could return to reserve team football before the year is out. But the Scotland international warns he will only make himself available for selection when he is sure of his fitness.

Caldwell underwent hip surgery in the summer, but is making significant progress thanks to copious amounts of Owen Coyle’s Special Juice. Or more likely an effective recuperation regime, which might have played some part in his ongoing recovery.

Amid recent defensive issues, cries of ‘bring on Caldwell… with his crutches’ were commonplace in the East Stand. However, consecutive Championship wins have alleviated pressure on the speedy return of Caldwell and Ivan Ramis, who is also close to a welcome comeback.

JWAW representatives were sat mere feet away from a crutch-wielding Caldwell at the Wigan-Atromitos game in July, where he and Shaun Maloney were offering Statler and Waldorf-style commentary. I will not reveal what their conversations entailed, but I definitely would be in favour of them becoming official match pundits.

Wait, did I really just compare Wigan Athletic players to Muppets? A coldly realistic reminder that JWAW needs some more original material, that.
